Word Study: Sovereignty

With people in crisis situations, in my own prayers and declarations, I keep thinking of the Lord being SOVEREIGN in majesty, power, rulership, authority.
1. The quality or state of being sovereign
2. The status, dominion, power, or authority of a sovereign; royalty.
3. Supreme and independent power or authority in government as possessed or claimed by a state or community
4. Rightful status, independence, or prerogative.
5. A sovereign state, community, or political unit.

  • Supreme and unrestricted power, as of a state
  • The position, dominion, or authority of a sovereign
  • An independent state

One of the most extraordinary books on this topic was written by A W. Pink – The Sovereignty of God Following are a few of his key points on sovereignty:

  • God’s Sovereignty Defined: “Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is Thine; Thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and Thou art exalted as Head above all” (1 Chron. 29:11).
  • The Sovereignty Of God In Creation: “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory, and honor, and power: for Thou hast created all things, and for Thy pleasure they are and were created” (Rev. 4:11).
  • Sovereignty Of God In Administration: “The LORD hath prepared His Throne In the heavens; and His Kingdom ruleth over all” (Psa. 103:19).
  • The Sovereignty Of God In Salvation: “O the depths of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out” (Rom. 11:33).
  • The Sovereignty Of God In Reprobation: “Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God” (Rom. 11:22).
  • The Sovereignty Of God In Operation: “For of Him, and through Him, and to Him, are all things: to whom be the glory for ever. Amen” (Romans 11:36).
  • God’s Sovereignty And The Human Will: “It is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure” (Phil. 2: 13).
  • Sovereignty And Human Responsibility: “So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God” (Rom. 14:12).
  • God’s Sovereignty And Prayer: “If we ask anything according to His will, He heareth us” (1 John 5:14).
  • Our Attitude Toward His Sovereignty: “Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in Thy sight” (Matt. 11:26).
  • Difficulties And Objections: “Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not My way equal? are not your ways unequal?” (Ezek. 18:25).
  • The Value Of This Doctrine: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, And is profitable for doctrine, For reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, Thoroughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Tim. 3:16, 17).

“Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth” (Rev. 19:6).
